On April 6 I visited Vanslag for a sold out The Secret Sisters concert. I’ve seen them before at the Take Roots festival, but that was back in 2011 so I was eager to see them again after such a long time.

As I arrived the venue was indeed nearly full. The Secret Sisters were welcomed on stage with a ‘Happy Birthday’ as Laura had her birthday a day earlier. And off the bat it was clear what kind of night it would be: lot’s of amusing and hilarious tales mixed with beautiful songs.

The sisters have started with a warning that whatever feeling of hope or good fortune we might have, we’d better try and keep hold of it as there wasn’t a song on the setlist that wasn’t sad, dark or depressing.

A murder ballad was introduced as being one of the only songs out of their imagination as they mostly write out of experiences but they’d never killed anyone before. However… traveling with your sister all the time did at times make you wonder if the next murder ballad might be out of personal experience.

Ending the first set, they played some covers and again each had a good story, of some on stage arguments. Who of the two got to be Paul and who had to be Art, love declarations for Graham Nash and an impressive story about how they got to share the stage with their hero Don Everly (of the Everly Brothers).

The second set contained some more wonderful songs including the wonderful -and title to their third album- You Don’t Own Me Anymore. They skipped the ‘ leaving the stage, waiting for applause and come back part’ and played two more songs for the encore and ended the concert acoustically to a silent audience. It was a lovely lovely evening and I do so hope they’ll com back soon!

Many thanks to The Secret Sisters, to Roots on the Road and Vanslag. Evenings like this are what it’s about!
